Earlier, Karthik made a surprise move by making Amit Mishra open the attack and the leg spinner obliged the Delhi Daredevils skipper in the first over itself. Mishra bowled Madhya Pradesh Ranji opener Mohnish Mishra, who came in place of the injured VVS Laxman, with a googly in the fourth ball of the innings. Deccan Chargers skipper Gilchrist (24; 14 balls, 4x4, 1x6) made yet another explosive start. Sarabhjit Ladda, the second leg spinner, got into act and he got a big wicket. The left-hander top-edged a googly to be caught in the off side by wicketkeeper Karthik.

Herschelle Gibbs, who survived a run out chance, hit a 26-ball 31 (2x4, 2x6). But ths South African innings was cut short, thanks to a fine catch at backward point by Australian all rounder Henriques, who came in place of out-of-form TM Dilshan. The aggressive Symonds (35; 24 balls, 3x4, 2x6), who has been among runs, looked good for another 50 but Henriques had him caught at short covers and Deccan Charges were reduced to 103/4.

However, Rohit Sharma and T Suman were associated in a 60-run stand for the fifth wicket. Sharma played a hard-hitting and fast-paced innings for his 30-ball 45 (3x4, 3x6) before he was out in the 19th over. Suman stayed till the end to score another useful 19-ball 29 (3x4, 1x6) as the Deccan Chargers put up a competitive 171/6. Y Venugopala Rao was included in the team for the first time. He came in place of Anirudh Singh.

For the first time, left-arm seamer Dirk Nannes proved expensive as he finished 4-0-39-1. Amit Mishra, who did not bowl his fourth, had 1 for 12 in three overs.
