Snappy Report: DD vs CSK

Match: Delhi Daredevils vs Chennai Super Kings

When: March 19, 2010, 4 pm

Where: Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi

Who won: Chennai Super Kings

How: By five wickets and with five balls to spare

Man-of-the-Match: Matthew Hayden for his power-packed 93

MVP of the match: Suresh Raina for playing a captain’s knock

What’d he do?: The captain of the Chennai Super Kings played an uncharacteristic innings, not going for as many boundaries and sixes as he usually does. Instead, he batted all the way through. He took three superlative catches to back his wonderful 49* and brilliant captaincy.

Turning point: It was the twelfth over of each innings that was the turning point of the match. During the Delhi innings, they lost two wickets in one over off Muralidaran and Chennai Super Kings’ opener Matthew Hayden decided to switch to the Mongoose bat. The bat is 43% smaller than regular bats and is supposed to hit the ball 20% more powerfully. Hayden used it to good effect hitting seven sixes.

Longest hit: The Mongoose bat came into play as Hayden launched into Tillakaratne Dilshan and welcomed him to the bowling crease with a six over long-off, covering a distance of 76 metres.

Dot-ball hero: The skier from Australia, Dirk Nannes, bowled 16 dots but could not prevent his side from losing to the Super Kings

Innovation of the day: It was the most-awaited moment of IPL 2010, the debutant was finally there. The Mongoose bat finally made an appearance and it was none other than Haydos who made first use, bringing it into play in the fourth over. Come the twelfth over, Raina too started using it, and at the same time, Albie Morkel was seen trying it near the dug-out.

Captain vs. Captain: Delhi’s stand-in captain Dinesh Karthik sure is a multi-tasker as he proved in the match. He managed to stick together a small partnership with Mithun Manhas steadying the ship after they lost three quick wickets. His tactics, however, were baffling at times. Like bringing in Dilshan at the end of the innings, for example. The youngest ever captain of IPL, Suresh Raina, took three brilliant catches to help his team restrict the Daredevils to 185. He later played a captain’s innings taking his team to victory scoring. Raina also did something no captain has tried before, giving four different bowlers one over each at the start of the innings!

Moment of the day: A spectacular catch by Justin Kemp at mid-on to dismiss a well-set Sehwag as he tried to hoick Muralidaran. The ball swirled in the air and Kemp took a one-handed catch and fell backwards just inches from the rope.
