Preview: KKR vs CSK (IPL 2010 – Game 8)

What

The eight game of IPL 2010 sees the resurgent Kolkata Knight Riders host the Chennai Super Kings at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

When

Tuesday, March 16, 2010. The game begins at 8.00 pm, IST.

Where

Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The home ground of the Kolkata Knight Riders can, as Mark Boucher said in an interview, ‘be quite intimidating’ for visitors. Kolkatans would be filling the stands long ahead of the match to see their team complete a hat-trick of wins in IPL 2010.

The weather forecast for the game is slightly gloomy. The forecast says that rain may play spoilsport, with the Met department predicting that there will be rain in the afternoon. The fans are all praying that the forecast doesn’t come true.

The Protagonists

Kolkata Knight Riders are riding on a wave of success and have more good news in the form of New Zealand speed merchant Shane Bond joining their team on Monday. Though he is unlikely to be in the playing XI, his arrival will surely provide a boost to the squad. Sourav Ganguly’s leadership has been exemplary and both matches have seen new stars emerging for the team. Angelo Mathews’ form would be heart-warming for KKR fans and he, along with Charl Langeveldt and Ishant Sharma, should be a troika of bowlers to watch out for.

Chennai Super Kings have a major problem on their hands: a weak bowling attack. They are a top-heavy team with great batsmen like Matthew Hayden, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni, but lack depth in the bowling except for Muttiah Muralidaran. They would be looking to L Balaji and Albie Morkel to use the Eden pitch to their advantage.

What next?

While KKR would be hoping to continue their good run, CSK need to recover from the loss to Deccan Chargers with a win. This is a face-off between two great leaders – Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni – and it remains to be seen who marshals his troops better on the day.
