Deccan Chargers bounce back in style, tame Chennai Super Kings

Match Report: Match- 5: Deccan Chargers vs Chennai Super Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium, 14th March, 2010.

Chennai, March 14: Defending champions the Deccan Chargers bounced back in style to defeat Chennai Super Kings by 31 runs in match 5 of the IPL 2010 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here today.

After hurtling towards a shock defeat against the Kolkata Knight Riders in the season opener of IPL 2010 in Mumbai, the Deccan Chargers opened their account with a commanding performance, both with the bat and the ball. Electing to bat, Deccan Chargers blasted the Chennai Super Kings to score 190/4 and then stopped M.S. Dhoni and his men in their tracks with a good bowling effort to restrict the Chennai Super Kings at 159/9.

Lankan medium pacer Chaminda Vaas, who took IPL 2010’s first wicket in the first match against Kolkata Knight Riders, destroyed the top order to set up a fine victory for the Deccan Chargers. The left-arm medium pacer was on target in the third over, cleaning up Murali Vijay. Three balls later Vaas had left-hander Suresh Raina caught behind. The gallant Vaas then took the big wicket of Mathew Hayden, the 2009 Purple Cap winner. Chennai Super Kings were in trouble when S Badrinath was caught at long off, of the bowling of RP Singh and they were 32/4 in 5.3 overs. Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha then foxed the dangerman Justin Kemp. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni tried to stem the rot by making a valiant 29-ball 42 (3x4, 2x6) but he did not last long as Andrew Symonds bowled him and with that ended Chennai Super King’s hopes of any fruitful run chase. The Deccan Chargers Hyderabad fielding was also top class tonight at the M A Chidambaram stadium.

Earlier Symonds was brutal with the bat and powered last years winners the Deccan Chargers to a match-winning total of 190/4 in 20 overs. After a sedate start (3 off 17 deliveries), the explosive Symonds blasted off with an inside-out six over extra over off Laksmipathy Balaji and then went berserk. He hit two more sixes and three fours for his second IPL 50. His innings was terminated when he was run out by the agile Hayden, a flick to the non-striker’s end with the super slow motion camera ruling him out.

Electing to bat, Adam Gilchrist (38; 17 balls, 4x4, 3x6) gave a blistering start to the Deccan Chargers innings. The skipper clouted 6, 6 ,4 off Sudeep Tyagi’s first over, with the unfortunate and inexperienced medium pacer conceding 19 runs. The Hyderabadi side raced off to 50 in 4.2 over and Gilchrist in the process became the first batsman in IPL to reach 1,000 runs. Off-spinner R Ashwin saw the back of Gilchrist by having him castled. The Deccan Chargers then lost the second wicket at the same score of 55 when VVS Laxman was run out by Suresh Raina. Herschelle Gibbs (36-ball 45) and Symonds were involved in 95-run partnership with the former too enjoying the run feast. Gibbs was also run out and this time Albie Morkel threw the stumps at the non-striker’s end.

Chennai Super Kings may have been delighted to see the back of Gibbs and Symonds in quick succession. However, Rohit Sharma and T Suman rattled up 30 runs in 11 deliveries, 20 coming off which came in the last over with the hapless bowler once again being Tyagi. There was more misery for the nervous Tyagi, who bowled his second bouncer in one over and umpire Daryl Harper barred him from bowling the last ball, which saw Justin Kemp walk up and deliver the ball to complete the over. Tyagi was hit for 39 runs in 1.5 overs.
