Mumbai Indians roll past Chennai Super Kings to top of the leader board

Match Report: Match-21: Mumbai Indians v Chennai Super Kings at Brabourne Stadium, 25th March, 2010.

Mumbai, March 25: There was just no stopping the Mumbai Indians or their captain Sachin Tendulkar, as he helped the demolish the Chennai Super Kings by five wickets. Tendulkar (74 off 52 balls, 3x4, 1x6) notched up his third half century in Match 21 of the IPL 2010 at Brabourne Stadium here today, helping the Mumbai Indians chase down 181 runs in 19 overs.

Shikar Dhawan set the ball rolling for the Mumbai Indians, as the left-hander Dhawan swung Joginder Sharma for three fours and the Mumbai Indians got 50 runs in 4.5 overs. Chennai Super Kings drew the first blood in the ninth over as Dhawan (34-ball 56, 5x4, 3x6) fell to left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati. Muttiah Muralitharan was too clever for Saurabh Tiwary (bowled) as Mumbai Indian lost two wickets in quick succession. Rajagopal Satish was castled by Joginder Sharma which paved the way for the explosive Kieron Pollard to the crease. The West Indian, the costliest player, lasted nine balls blasted 20 (3x4, 1x6) before being bowled by Muralitharan.

Tendulkar, who scored his third half century in the tournament, was out with seven runs away from victory. But Dwayne Bravo, with a six and a four steered the Mumbai Indians to their fourth victory. Chennai Super Kings suffered their third successive loss.

Suresh Raina roared back to form with scintillating 52-ball 83 (7x4, 3x6) as Chennai Super Kings made 180/2. The left-hander, whose previous best was 20 so far in the tournament, began in fine fashion by flicking Dwayne Bravo for six. He blazed away to a glorious 32-ball half century. Chennai Super Kings’ 50 came in 5.4 overs and 100 in 11.4 overs.

Mumbai Indians came out with new strategies and sling bowler Lasith Malinga was introduced in the 11th over but that did not stop Raina, who milked the bowling in style. His partner S Badrinath played the anchor role to perfection. The duo were associated in a 142-run stand in 15 overs for the third wicket. Badrinath, too, played some pleasing strokes in his unbeaten 55 (45 balls, 6x4).

Left-hander Matthew Hayden was off to a flying start as the Aussie opener smashed slammed Zaheer Khan for four successive four in his first over. Skipper Tendulkar brought in off-spinner Harbhajan Singh in the fourth over. The Mongoose bat was also out but Harbhajan trapped the big-hitting Hayden in front to give a crucial breakthrough. Hayden could make a 12-ball 20 (4x4). Mumbai Indians bagged the second wicket in the next over when South African paceman Ryan McLaren bowled Parthiv Patel (8). Mumbai Indians made a perfect as Chennai Super Kings lost both their openers for 38 runs in 5 overs.

Chennai Super Kings made four changes to the team. Mahendra Singh Dhoni was back as captain. Also to come in were Joginder Sharma, Shadab Jakati and Thissara Perera. Out-of-form M Vijay, George Bailey, R Ashwin and Sudeep Tyagi were rested.
