Naman Ojha leads Rajasthan Royals to fourth win in a row

Match Report: Match-24: Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings at Sardar Patel Stadium, Ahmedabad, 28th March, 2010

Ahmedabad, March 28: The Shane Warne led Rajasthan Royals kept their record intact in what they called their home fortress, with their fourth win in a row as they demolished Chennai Super Kings by 17 runs in the Match 24 at Sardar Patel Stadium on Sunday. Rajasthan Royals, who scored 177/8, on the back of a fluent 80 from their wicket-keeper and opening bat Naman Ojha contained Chennai Super Kings for 160/6.

Rajasthan Royals, have thus made a fairytale comeback in IPL 2010 with four consecutive wins, jumping to the third spot on the leader board, while the Chennai Super Kings have slumped to their fourth defeat in a row, one of the worst performances in the IPL since its inaugural season in 2008.

Naman Ojha slammed a sizzling 49-ball 80 (6x4, 5x6) as Rajasthan Royals reached 177 for 8. Left-handed opener Michael Lumb (30, 16 balls 3x4, 2x6) who was all aggression, once again provided a great start for the Rajasthan Royals. He was especially, severe on South African swing bowler Albie Morkel, taking two fours and two sixes. But Morkel had his revenge by scaling the wicket of Lumb, with clever change of pace, which deceived Lumb who gave a tame shot to mid-off where Thilan Thushara brought off a good diving catch. Rajasthan Royals were 47/1 in 4 overs.

Left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati, who has been impressive, captured two wickets in successive overs. First to go was left-hander Faiz Fazal (17), who was held in the deep but it was the second wicket that Jakati celebrated. The dangerous Yusuf Pathan lasted six deliveries, scoring just eight run before walking back to the pavilion. Pathan was done in by clever piece of bowling by Jakati, with the batsman, getting a leading edge and being caught by Suresh Raina.

Ojha though continued at his fluent best. He heaved a good six off off-spinnner Muttiah Muralitharan but he was finally out to a tame shot, giving a catch to Joginder Sharma at short leg. Rajasthan Royals was 155/4 in 18th over. In the next over, Chennai Super Kings dismissed three batsmen in three deliveries to restrict Rajasthan Royals. P Dogra was run out, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala holed out it to the deep and then skipper Shane Warne was run out.

Mathew Hayden hit a six and four to give the Chennai Super Kings a good start. The opening pair of Hayden and new partner Murali Vijay, who replaced Parthiv Patel, put on 24 runs. Hayden lasted 14 deliveries. But he was stopped as off-spinner Pathan plucked off a fine return catch. Vijay, who struck 6, 4, 4, 6, 4 in Sumit Narwal’s second over, virtually gifted his wicket by going for a non-existent single to be run out for 42 (25 balls , 4x4, 2x6). Left-hander Suresh Raina was bowled, going for a sweep against Warne. It was a rank bad shot and Chennai slipped to 79/3 in 9.4 overs.

But it was the wicket of skipper Mahendra Sing Dhoni that hurt Chennai Super Kings. Dhoni played Pathan to mid-wicket and set off for what looked like an easy couple, but while returning for the second run he collided with S Badrinath. Adam Voges’ throw was on the spot and an angry Dhoni was back for a 19-ball 21. Left-hander Albie Morkel threatened to take the match away from Rajasthan Royals by hitting Warne for three sixes in one over. But Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait dismissed Badrinath and Morkel with short balls. Rajasthan Royals were truly on their way to another spectacular victory.
