Coach feels DC can win

Mumbai: The last thing you want when things are not going your way is someone who keeps reminding you of the past and tells you how disappointing the last defeat was. Luckily for Deccan Chargers, in coach Darren Lehmann they have someone who is very positive and has a lot of faith in his side.

Speaking to iplt20.com about the team’s recent three straight losses, Lehmann said: “[I’m] not worried, we’re working towards an instance where everything clicks in the correct part of the tournament. Seven games to go, we’ve won three and lost four, we’ve just got to play well from here on in, and if we do that, the results will look after themselves. If we don’t, then we won’t. We’ll just worry about our next game, and that’s it.”

The Australian is also a very shrewd man as he tried every trick in the book to hide his tactics and team selection for Saturday’s game against Mumbai Indians. Asked about the combination and whether Kemar Roach and Chaminda Vaas would feature, he said: “Chaminda is playing well. You have Kemar Roach, and he’ll be coming back into contention tomorrow. Sometimes, you have to make adjustments.”

And what about VVS Laxman?

”There may be a chance again, he’s in good form, so we’ll have to wait and see.”

Lehmann feels that his team has been doing well in parts and it is just a matter of all three facets clicking well in one game.

Deccan’s middle order – grounded largely in domestic talent – has failed to live up to the standards they set for themselves during last year’s successful adventure in South Africa. Lehmann is hoping for a swift turnaround in their fortunes.

“I wouldn’t say [they have been] disappointing, but lack[ing] of confidence,” Lehmann explained. “(Pragyan) Ojha bowled well against them (in the last match against KKR). They would try to take more runs and more wickets. As a coach you hope that all the hard work transforms on to the field sooner rather than later.”

At no stage in the press conference did the coach show signs of concern ahead of the next match, not even when the question of how to tackle Sachin Tendulkar was thrown at him.

“You tell me,” Lehmann responded. “I’m the coach. He’s (Tendulkar’s) in great form and playing well, so we have some plans for him. If there is an opportunity, we have to grab it with both hands. There are other good players as well, so for us it’s about doing well and not worrying about the names on the other side.”

With such positive vibes coming from the coach, added with the pride and belief of being the defending champions, Deccan believe they still have a big role to play in this tournament.
