Tiwary continues upward mobility

Mumbai: Mumbai Indians rising star Saurabh Tiwary was excited about helping to finish off yet another game for his side when he spoke to the media after the win over Kings XI Punjab. Here's more from the interaction after his 23-ball 31 paved the way to a four-wicket success.

Excerpts:

On not being able to stay till the end: I obviously didn’t like that I got out in the end but we won and that is more important.

On Ravi Bopara being given the second last over and not Brett Lee: This is cricket. It is a very funny game, anything can happen. It could also be that they would have won.

On what Zaheer Khan was telling him after the win: (laughter) No he was just fooling around (laughs). He was telling me to finish the match and come, and something good about batting.

On Sachin: No you cannot compare anyone to him. It feels good, the IPL, and I am learning a lot here.

Sekar hoping to maintain winning streak

Mumbai Indians Director of Operations TA Sekar is hoping that his team do not fall foul of the law of averages.

Excerpts:

On Lasith Malinga: I think Lasith bowled one of the best spells in the tournament (4-22) and he has been our main strike bowler. We use him very judiciously to get wickets whenever we want and he responds to the captain’s needs.

On the preparation of the team: The thing is, the preparation has been quite long. We started the camp in late February, around the 22nd, and a lot of input has gone into these boys. We played lots of practice matches and centre-wicket practice and Robin (Singh – Coach) really worked hard on these boys. Sachin (Tendulkar – Captain) joined the camp on the 3rd March and then he took personal interest and went and spoke to each and every player on a one-on-one basis; Zaheer (Khan) spoke to the bowlers on what areas to bowl and then we collectively spoke to all the bowlers and worked on their technique. So a lot of hard work has gone in to this year’s Mumbai Indians preparation.

On whether MI are peaking too early: It’s not a question of peaking early. The thing is, when you have to win you have to win. You cannot lose two matches and say we still have time to peak, I don’t believe in this. I think when you have a chance to win you should win and I don’t think it is too early or anything. You set a standard and the other teams will be looking at us a bit differently.

On playing outside Mumbai: I think if you play well anywhere in India you can get the support, particularly if [there is] Sachin. Every state in the country is his home town and everyone wants to see Sachin batting and they follow Sachin. I agree it is going to be tough playing away games but the way in which we are playing we should be able to pull out a few more wins. We beat Delhi in Delhi and we beat Deccan Chargers. Even though it was in Mumbai we still beat them in their ‘home’ ground. But still we, with the combination we have, the strength we have, should be able to do our job.

On the fielding performance: Yeah, (fielding coach) Jonty Rhodes has worked hard. I think our fielding standards have really gone up and you have seen they have taken some brilliant catches and definitely we have some very good fielders in (Rajagopal) Sathish, (Dwayne) Bravo, (Kieron) Pollard, Shikhar Dhawan, Saurabh Tiwary.

On Bhajji’s catch: Harbhajan took an outstanding catch, he is one person who always gives more than 100% on the field because he is always pumped up to perform.

On the law of averages catching up with them: Law of averages caught us in the third match. I think we lost one match, that is enough. I think it is bound to catch up, I think we should have that in mind and then plan and play properly and we should be able to do a good job.
