Daredevils trounce KKR

Match Report: Match-26: Delhi Daredevils vs Kolkata Knight Riders at the Ferozshah Kotla Stadium, Delhi, March 29th 2010

New Delhi, March 29: Left-handed opener David Warner blazed away to a 69-ball 107 (9x4, 5x6) and his record fourth wicket partnership of 128 runs in 16.2 overs with England all-rounder Paul Collingwood (53 off 45 balls, 3x4, 2x6) fired Delhi Daredevils to a thumping 40-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 26 of the IPL 2010 at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium here today.

Thanks to the record partnership, Delhi Daredevils posted 177 for 4 and Kolkata Knight Riders surrendered meekly as they made 137/9 in 20 overs.
With back-to-back wins and with their first home win the Delhi Daredevils jumped to the fourth spot with eight points, while the Kolkata Knight Riders slumped to their fourth loss and slipped further down in the table.

Delhi Daredevils lost the dangerous Virender Sehwag in the first over. Chris Gayle, after being hit for two fours, had Sehwag stumped. Skipper Gautam Gambhir, playing in his first match after the injury, lasted two balls before he was out lbw to South African swing bowler Charl Langeveldt, who had come into the side in place of New Zealand pace bowler Shane Bond. The Kiwi bowler did not play because of a stomach upset. Delhi Daredevils were soon 38/3 in three overs when Dinesh Karthik was bowled by Ishant Sharma.

Kolkata Knight Riders could not get a further breakthrough as England all-rounder Paul Collingwood, playing in his first match, steadied the Delhi Daredevils side in the company of Warner. The 23-year-old Australian left-hander was on a rampage. He pulled and drove the Kolkata Knight Riders attack with panache. He reached his 50 in 29 balls (7x4, 2x6) and got the second 50 in 37 deliveries. However, his heart skipped a bit when on 96. He drove back to left-arm spinner Murali Kartik and Kolkata Knight Riders fielders celebrated after the bowler dived and caught the ball. But the umpires called back Warner. The third umpire ruling him not out since the catch was not taken cleanly.

Warner and Collingwood made merry with the Kolkata Knight Riders attack. Collingwood struck two sixes off Gayle to bring his 50 in style. But his fine innings ended when David Hussey pulled off a magnificent catch at long-on. The batsman had struck Langeveldt high over long on but Hussey pulled the ball back and held the catch brilliantly.

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Sourav Ganguly used seven bowlers but Langeveldt was the most successful bowler with two wickets while Hussey conceded only 26 runs in his four overs.

Delhi Daredevils tasted success in his third over with left-arm seamer Dirk Nannes bowling Ganguly. Leg-spinner Amit Mishra deceived Mandeep Singh in the air and was stumped while the hero of the last match Manoj Tiwary was castled by AB McDonald for nought. Rajat Bhatia got the explosive Chris Gayle caught in the deep for a 21-ball 30, a wicket that had the Kolkata Knight Riders struggling at 50/4 in 8.1 overs. It was all over bar the shouting when David Hussey was dismissed for 29. Medium pacer Umesh Yadav returned with two wickets.
